The Aussie outdoor lifestyle — with all the surfing, beach days and camping that comes with it — is fun.
What’s less fun, however, is the sand, dirt and grass that ends up back in the house after a long day of beaching and walking.
This is exactly why one mum devised a solution.

Muk Mat, created by Aussie mum Suzanne Horton and her partner, was designed with the idea of keeping dirt and sand from her active boys outside where it belongs.
The artificial turf mat was devised as a doormat for her kids to scrub their feet after a surf, and later became something that was “useful to clean our feet/shoes after running, footy, golf, riding and camping”.
Six years after launching in 2017, Muk Mat is now worth a cool $10 million, with international expansion on the horizon.
Even better than this, Suzanne’s clever mats are now available in over 100 retailers throughout Australia and New Zealand, including Anaconda, and shoppers regularly rave about the products.
So what sets the Muk Mat apart from other doormats and why are there more than 1,000 glowing Google reviews?
Firstly, it’s all about the composition of the $60 door mat.
Made from the “highest-quality 40mm synthetic turf”, the mats are soft underfoot, but durable enough to effectively remove muck, dirt and sand from your feet or shoes.
According to Suzanne, the mats are also water-resistant, UV protected, recyclable and “neatly bound with marine grade trim”.
“The original artificial grass mat is a must-have when it comes to maintaining your clean spaces like the home, the tent, the car and the caravan,” Suzanne says on the Muk Mat website.
“The Muk Mat Original is ideal for the outdoor-loving family with its water resistance capabilities to facilitate the effortless removal of muk from feet and shoes.”
You can also roll it up and secure it with the handy velcro strap if you want to take it on a camping holiday.
There are a number of Muk Mats available online, whether you want the classic Green Original ($60), the Green Large ($80) or the Extra Large ($90).
You can also buy Grey Mats, which people are often using inside their homes and vans in order to ensure they both look stylish and repel dirt.
Reviews online for Muk Mat are glowing.
There are more than 1,000 Google reviews and the mats have been described as “game-changing” and “amazing”.
“Fantastic quality. We got two of these for our caravan. They are so easy to clean. Just hose them off. The dogs like to sleep on them too,” one shopper wrote.
“Best invention ever with a little one in and out of the caravan! Keeps the dirt out and the inside of the van clean! Happy mum and happy bub!” another added.
A third said: “So impressed I bought my friend one”.
Others said they use them in their car, as well as when they put up a tent to camp on holiday, with one describing it as the “best thing I’ve ever bought”.
“The biggest reward I get from my business is the genuine delight our customers experience when using Muk Mat, knowing that we’ve provided a straightforward solution to the nagging issue of sand and grit,” Suzanne said.
“As a mother of two adventurous boys who share my passion for the outdoors, I’m personally motivated to make life easier for families like mine.”
