Lorain: Patrons melt designs into shape at Perler bead party

The Lorain Public Library System has resumed in-person programming.

The South Lorain Branch, 2121 Homewood Drive, held a Perler bead party Nov. 1.

“The Perler bead party is a very fun and relaxing activity for families and all ages,” said South Lorain Branch associate Tania Santiago. “They can do all sorts of shapes and different drawings; it’s a great family activity and they receive a keepsake.”

The process includes using Perler beads to outline a pegboard then melting the beads, with an iron, to seal the design, Santiago said.

The Library began holding events again in September.

“From September through now, is our season for fall type events,” Santiago said. “Our winter season Connections Magazine will be coming out soon, and we’ll hold Christmas and holiday-themed events.”

The events coincide with the current season.

“We hold activities for Women’s History Month as well as Black History Month and Valentine’s Day,” Santiago said. “We always try to incorporate a historical lesson in our activities.”

She said she encourages people to visit their local branch library.

“During the past year throughout COVID, I think people have lost their social skills a little bit,” Santiago said. “So, it’s good to attend programs that are activity-based.

“But, it helps to meet people and socialize as well.”

The Library has more to offer than just books, she said.

“It’s very important for people to realize that the Lorain Library is just not books, but it’s a community center,” Santiago said. “We hold activities and seminars about things like nutrition and finance; it’s truly a hub for free information and gathering.”

Santiago started with the Library in April, but said she enjoys being active in the community.

“My favorite part of working here is being able to get my creative side out,” she said. “As I get to know our patrons, I can come up with ideas that I know they’ll enjoy, or will be interested in exploring.”
